The VoIP & PBX glossary for Pakistani business

Every phone-system word a Pakistani business owner runs into (PBX, PABX, DID, IVR, SIP trunk, COD, RTO), each explained in a line or two of plain English. You won't need an engineering background to follow along.

Updated July 2026

This glossary is for the shop owner, online seller or office manager who keeps hearing words like PABX, DID and SIP trunk and wants a straight answer. Salespeople in Pakistan mix old and new vocabulary freely, so we cover both the legacy terms and the cloud ones, and point you to a fuller page wherever a term deserves it. If you only remember one thing, remember this: a cloud PBX is one business number your whole team answers from an app. You can see pricing from PKR 3,200/month, or book a free demo and watch it work on a live call.

Key takeaway

PABX and EPABX are the old box on the wall. IP PBX and cloud PBX do the same job over the internet, with no hardware to buy: one number, answered by the whole team from a mobile app.

Roman Urdu: PABX purana daba hai; cloud PBX wohi cheez internet par hai. Ek number, poori team, sirf mobile app se.

Core phone-system terms

PBX

Private Branch Exchange. The switchboard that connects your team's phones to each other and to the outside world, so the whole business shares one number across many internal lines. The old ones were metal boxes on the wall. Today the same job is done in the cloud. If you're new to all this, start with our guide to what a PBX is.

PABX

Private Automatic Branch Exchange. The word most Pakistani buyers still use for the traditional phone box in the office, usually a Panasonic, NEC or Chinese unit wired to desk phones. "Automatic" just means it switches calls without a human operator. See how it compares in PABX vs cloud PBX.

EPABX

Electronic Private Automatic Branch Exchange. The same thing as a PABX. The "E" only says it's electronic rather than mechanical, and in practice the two words mean the same hardware. Curious what those boxes cost? See PABX price in Pakistan.

IP PBX

Internet Protocol PBX. A PBX that carries calls as internet data (IP) instead of over copper wires. It can be a box in your office or run fully in the cloud, and it connects to SIP trunks rather than analogue lines. Read more about IP PBX systems.

Cloud PBX / Hosted PBX

The exchange runs on the provider's servers, not in your building. There is nothing to install and nobody needs to come and wire the office. Your whole team answers one business number from a mobile or desktop app, wherever they are. This is what voipcom provides. Plans start from PKR 3,200/month on pricing, and there's full detail on cloud PBX in Pakistan.

How calls are routed

Extension

A short internal number, like 101 or 102, for one person or desk. Callers reach the right team member without anyone needing a separate SIM, and staff can dial each other for free inside the system.

DID

Direct Inward Dialing. A real public phone number that rings straight into your system, such as an Islamabad 051, Karachi 021, Lahore 042, Faisalabad 041 or Multan 061 line. The number belongs to the business rather than sitting in an employee's SIM. With voipcom, Islamabad 051 numbers are live today; Karachi 021, Lahore 042 and mobile numbers are launching next. Browse Pakistan DID numbers.

IVR

Interactive Voice Response. The recorded menu that greets callers ("press 1 for sales, press 2 for support") and sends them to the right place automatically. You can record it in Urdu, English or both. See the IVR system page.

Auto-attendant

Another name for the IVR's welcome greeting and menu. Think of it as the automated receptionist that picks up on the first ring, day or night, so callers never hear a busy tone and nothing slips through.

Call queue

When every agent is busy, callers wait in line with hold music instead of hearing a busy tone. The next free agent picks up the next caller, so nobody gets skipped and your staff aren't juggling three calls at once.

The VoIP technology

VoIP

Voice over Internet Protocol. Making phone calls over the internet instead of traditional copper lines. It's the technology underneath a cloud PBX, and it's what turns a stable 4G or broadband connection into a proper business phone line.

SIP

Session Initiation Protocol. The shared "language" that VoIP phones and apps use to start, ring and end a call. When a vendor mentions a "SIP account" or "SIP extension," they mean a line that speaks this standard.

SIP trunk

A bundle of virtual phone lines delivered over the internet. It connects your PBX to the public phone network through a licensed operator, replaces the old physical wires, and can carry many calls at the same time on one connection.

Trunk

The connection between your phone system and the outside world. On old PABX gear it was a physical line from the telephone exchange. On modern systems it's a SIP trunk running over the internet.

DTMF

Dual-Tone Multi-Frequency. The beep tones your phone makes when you press keypad digits. It's how a caller "presses 1 to confirm" inside an IVR, or on an automated COD order-confirmation call.

Softphone

An app on an ordinary smartphone or laptop that works just like an office desk phone. Your team makes and takes business calls from wherever they happen to be, and you don't buy any hardware.

Records & e-commerce

Call recording

Every call saved as an audio file you can play back later. Useful for training new staff, checking quality, and settling "who said what" without an argument. You choose which calls to record and keep.

CDR

Call Detail Record. The log line for each call: who called, which number, who answered, when, and for how long. Put together, CDRs become the reports you use to manage the team and spot missed calls.

COD

Cash on Delivery. The pay-when-it-arrives method behind most Pakistani e-commerce orders, roughly 75 to 95% of them. Because nothing is paid upfront, confirming each order by phone does real work for your margin. See Shopify COD confirmation calls.

RTO

Return to Origin. A COD parcel that is refused or undelivered and shipped back to the seller, so you pay shipping both ways for nothing. RTO commonly runs about 20 to 35%. An automated confirmation call (press 1 to confirm, 2 to cancel) can pull it toward 18 to 22%. Learn how to cut COD returns.

FAQ

Questions people search

What is the difference between PABX and PBX?

PBX is the general term for a business phone exchange. PABX (and EPABX) is the older word Pakistani buyers use for a traditional on-premise box wired to desk phones. A cloud PBX is the same idea, but the exchange runs over the internet with no hardware.

What does DID mean in a phone system?

DID stands for Direct Inward Dialing: a real public number, such as an Islamabad 051 or Karachi 021 line, that rings straight into your system. The DID belongs to the business, so it never walks out the door in an employee's SIM.

Is VoIP the same as SIP?

No. VoIP is the broad idea of carrying voice calls over the internet. SIP is the specific protocol, or language, that most VoIP phones and apps use to set up and end those calls. SIP is one of the standards that makes VoIP work.

What is the difference between IVR and auto-attendant?

They usually mean the same thing: the recorded greeting and menu that answers a call and routes it. People say auto-attendant when they mean the automated receptionist, and IVR when they mean the press-a-key part. See our IVR system page.

What does RTO mean in COD e-commerce?

RTO means Return to Origin: a Cash on Delivery parcel that is refused or undelivered and shipped back to the seller, so you pay shipping both ways. An automated confirmation call (press 1 to confirm, 2 to cancel) helps bring it down.

What is a softphone?

A softphone is an app on a smartphone or laptop that works like an office desk phone. Your team makes and receives business calls, sees extensions and transfers callers, with no physical phone on the desk.
